On his first visit to Fuji Speedway, Devon Modell scored a sensational second position, narrowly missing out on victory by less than two-seconds as the Blancpain GT Asia series met for the fourth round of the championship (18-20 August, 2017).
Teaming up once again with Nick Foster in the #88 Craft-Bamboo Racing Porsche 991 GT3R, Modell acclimatised to the circuit in Friday practice, putting in over 30 laps over the two sessions. Foster qualified the car for the first race, claiming pole position.
The start however saw Foster pushed wide at the first turn, dropping down to ninth position. A charging drive followed as he worked his way back up to third position and handed over to his teammate. Modell subsequently gained second position in the stop and then closed the gap to the leader and took the chequered flag just 1.4s behind.
“Nick drove well after being taken out at the first turn and then the team did an excellent job to gain second position in the pit stop,” said Modell. “I pushed hard to catch the leader but ultimately ran out of laps. Overall it was a great result, just a shame we were hit at the first turn, otherwise it could have been a win.”
Following the highs of the first race, the second was proved to be disappointing with Modell pushed wide at the first turn and the team having to endure a longer stop – due to the success of the first race – and ultimately finished 11th, fifth in class.
Modell returns to the Blancpain GT Asia series for rounds nine and ten at Shanghai International Circuit on 23-24 September.
